Meet the Staff: Matt Robert Greg Nate Scott James

Matt—owner, chief repairman
Matt Baker has been involved with guitars in one way or another for more than 25 years—as a player, member of several bands on both coasts, student (of music and of the histories of guitars), teacher, repairman, appraiser, instrument and music magazine reviewer, and finally in his current capacity as the owner of Action Music. Prior to opening Action Music, Matt managed several music stores and also operated a stringed instrument repair business. Matt received a repair certification in 1991 from Bryan Galloup’s Guitar Hospital in Big Rapids, Michigan. Matt spent most of his early and teenage years in Southern California, then crossed the country to Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, and finally Virginia. (back to top)

Robert—luthier, senior repair technician
Robert Budinsky completed the Master Program at the Galloup School of Luthiery in Big Rapids, MI. While there, he built several high-quality instruments including a dreadnaught steel string, a 17” archtop, and a cutaway classical. Robert came to Action Music in 2007 with a high degree of technical repair skills and a strong desire to adjust or repair your instrument to best suit your individual playing style. He is trained and experienced in the latest repair procedures as well as in the difference between a well thought-out solution and a hasty quick fix. Robert is from Michigan and relocated to NoVa to bring his luthiery talents to Action Music and our customers. (back to top)

When not rocking faces with local bands Driving East (Militia Group label) and Memphis 59, our resident amp expert can most likely be found on one of the many online music forums keeping tabs on all of the cool new boutique gear.  (back to top)

Scott—web guru
Scott Kurt is the one who takes all the great gear photos. He's here part-time, so if you want additional items, it may take 24-48 hours to get Scott to shoot and post them. Scott is proficient with basic guitar setups and is a talented singer-songwriter currently fronting Memphis 59.

James Healy, originally from Fredericksburg, VA, graduated from the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery
in Phoenix, AZ. in Jan 2009, while at Roberto-Venn, James built an OM style steel string acoustic and a neck through maple solid-body. The quality of these instruments along with
James' enthusiasm and attention to detail have made James a solid addition to the Action Music repair department. James is a dedicated fan of modern metal and is Action Music's resident Metal aficionado

Store Bio

Action Music was established in 1997 to provide the kind of music store that the owner (Matt) felt was missing in the local scene: a small, repair-oriented mom-and-pop shop that stocks a wide variety of parts as well as unique, interesting, and musically useful items. After working as a touring tech for a brief period, Matt felt that it would be nice to be able to find a store that, on top of the gear you expect to find, also stocks everything from flat-wound bass strings to hard-to-find vacuum tubes to felt ukulele picks.

The local community has responded, and with your support, Action Music is celebrating its 12th year in business. Action still strives to maintain a comprehensive parts and repair selection as well as new, used, and vintage guitars, amps, and effects. We add new lines each year. Even though we don't stock everything we wish we could, if we don't have it, we'll do our best to let you know where to find it.
